EAGLE PASS, TX — The Eagle Pass Independent School District has quietly made several administrative reassignments following an incident at Armando Cerna Elementary that continues to concern parents and staff members.

District sources confirmed that Matthew Uriegas has been appointed as the new principal of Armando Cerna Elementary. His appointment follows a wave of leadership changes that many believe are connected to the district’s handling of the recent incident at the campus.

As part of these changes, Instructional Officer Mrs. Magers was transferred from Perfecto Mancha Elementary to Liberty Elementary. This move made room for former Armando Cerna Principal Juan Leija, who was demoted and reassigned as an Instructional Officer at Perfecto Mancha.

Sources told The Maverick Times that these personnel shifts are directly tied to the fallout from the situation at Armando Cerna Elementary, though district leaders have not provided an explanation or public statement.

There are also reports that Instructional Officer Montes may soon be reassigned, but this has not been confirmed as of the time of publication.

The Maverick Times reached out to Eagle Pass ISD Superintendent Samuel Mijares to request comment regarding the reassignments and the district’s response to the situation at Armando Cerna. Superintendent Mijares provided a comment through text message “Any administrive or staff reassignments are made in the best interest of the students.”

Parents have expressed frustration over the district’s continued lack of communication, especially regarding matters that affect campus safety and staff accountability. Many community members are calling for greater transparency from district leadership and urging the administration to take responsibility for decisions that impact students and families.

These latest developments have added to growing concerns over the district’s leadership culture and communication practices as Eagle Pass ISD faces increasing scrutiny from both staff and parents.
