California Man Arrested After Allegedly Grabbing Eagle Pass Police Officer’s Service Weapon During Fourth of July Festivities

EAGLE PASS, Texas — A California man was arrested during Fourth of July festivities in Eagle Pass after police allege he became increasingly aggressive, resisted officers, and grabbed the service weapon of an arresting officer during a struggle.

According to the Eagle Pass Police Department, officers assigned to traffic control during the holiday festivities encountered an adult male identified as Marcus Hunter Ray, 36, of Chino Hills, California.

Officers Encounter Man Leaving Event Area

Police said Ray allegedly attempted to exit the event area in a manner contrary to directions being given by officers.

Officers made contact with Ray and reportedly observed signs of intoxication.

According to the Police Department, Ray became increasingly aggressive toward officers during the encounter.

Several of Ray’s acquaintances reportedly attempted to escort him away from the area to prevent further disturbance, but police said he continued acting in what authorities described as a combative and aggressive manner.

Police Say Suspect Posed Danger to Himself and Others

Officers determined that Ray allegedly posed a danger to himself and others and attempted to place him under arrest.

Police said Ray actively resisted officers during the arrest.

Suspect Allegedly Grabs Officer’s Service Weapon

During the ensuing struggle, authorities allege Ray grabbed the service weapon of one of the arresting officers.

Police were able to take Ray into custody.

He was transported to the Eagle Pass Police Department for booking and processing before being presented to a magistrate.

Charges and Bonds Announced

Ray was formally charged with Attempting to Take a Weapon from a Peace Officer, a state jail felony.

Bond on that charge was set at $15,000.

He was also charged with Resisting Arrest, a Class A misdemeanor.

Bond on the resisting arrest charge was set at $5,000.

The combined bond amount was set at $20,000.

Suspect Remanded to Tom Bowles Detention Center

Following the magistrate’s hearing, Ray was remanded to the Tom Bowles Detention Center.

Police said the case will be referred to the Maverick County District Attorney’s Office and the Maverick County Attorney’s Office for review and possible prosecution.

The incident occurred as Eagle Pass police officers were working traffic control during Fourth of July festivities.

All individuals accused of crimes are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
