EAGLE PASS, Texas — A 20 year old Eagle Pass man was arrested Saturday after allegedly resisting deputies during a domestic disturbance investigation on Zaragoza Street.

According to information provided to The Maverick Times by Maverick County Chief Deputy Roberto De Leon, deputies with the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Zaragoza Street on July 25, 2026, following a report of an aggressive male subject.

Deputies Respond to Reported Domestic Disturbance

When deputies arrived at the residence, they made contact with the female complainant, who reported that her 20 year old son, Jose Refugio Cortes, had assaulted her.
Deputies located Cortes at the rear of the property and attempted to take him into custody.

Deputies Say Suspect Actively Resisted Arrest

According to Chief Deputy De Leon, Cortes actively resisted as deputies attempted to place him in handcuffs. Authorities said deputies issued multiple verbal commands instructing him to stop resisting, but he allegedly refused to comply.

Due to the continued resistance, deputies used only the amount of force they determined was reasonably necessary to overcome the resistance and safely place Cortes into custody. Following a brief struggle, Cortes was secured in handcuffs without further incident.

Complainant Declines Assault Charges

During the investigation, the female complainant declined to pursue criminal charges related to the reported assault.
As a result, Cortes was arrested solely on the charge of Resisting Arrest.

Transported to Tom Bowles Detention Center

Following his arrest, Cortes was transported to the Tom Bowles Detention Center for booking and further processing.

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office stated it remains committed to protecting the safety of the community while ensuring incidents are handled professionally and in accordance with the law.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
