San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Cancels Uvalde Qualifier Due to Equine Virus Concerns

UVALDE, TX — The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has announced the cancellation of this year’s Uvalde Qualifier following growing concern over the spread of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) on the rodeo circuit.

In a statement released by CEO Cody Davenport, the organization said the decision was difficult but necessary to safeguard animal health and the safety of all contestants.

Health Concerns Lead to Cancellation

“Due to the recent Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) concern on the rodeo circuit, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel this year’s event,” Davenport said. “Protecting the health of our horses and the safety of our contestants must come first.”

The virus has prompted event organizers across the region to reevaluate competitions involving horses, with many choosing to postpone or cancel until the risk decreases.

Impact on PRCA Competitors

The Uvalde Qualifier is a significant event for PRCA and WPRA competitors, many of whom rely on it for a chance to secure a position at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in February.

Davenport acknowledged the loss of this opportunity and said the organization is currently reviewing how to address qualification concerns for affected athletes. Updates will be provided once a plan is finalized.

Appreciation for Uvalde’s Support

In his message, Davenport thanked the Uvalde community for its longstanding support of the event.

“Your community’s commitment—its partners and fans—means a great deal to all of us,” he wrote. “We appreciate your understanding and be assured we will be returning to Uvalde next year.”

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo emphasized that the decision was made with the best interest of competitors, horses, and the broader rodeo community in mind.
