Two Women Arrested in Zavala County After Traffic Stop Reveals Stolen Dodge Charger

La Pryor, Texas — A routine traffic stop in La Pryor led Zavala County deputies to uncover a stolen vehicle and arrest two women now facing felony charges.
At approximately 6:19 p.m., a Zavala County deputy conducted a traffic stop on a gray 2021 Dodge Charger Scat Pack for failure to display a front license plate. The stop occurred west of U.S. Highway 57 and Hoyt Avenue.
Authorities identified the driver as Naila Leija and the passenger as Maria Costilla. During the field interview, Leija presented a Mexican driver’s license but was unable to provide proof of insurance, telling deputies she had just purchased the vehicle earlier that day in San Antonio for $5,000 and was returning home to Mexico.

A records check conducted through Crystal City Communications revealed the Charger had been reported stolen by the San Antonio Police Department. Zavala County Auto Theft Investigators responded to the scene to question both occupants.
Leija and Costilla were detained and transported to the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office, where they were charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, a State Jail Felony under Texas law. The stolen vehicle was inventoried and later released to Garcia’s Wrecker Service.
The Zavala County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case and has not released additional details regarding the vehicle theft.
