Uvalde County officials have arrested 33 individuals in a sweeping crackdown on gang activity, known as “Operation U-Town.” The operation, which took place on August 27, 2024, targeted some of the most violent gangs in the area, including the Latin Kings, West Texas Tango, Texas Syndicate, and the Texas Mexican Mafia, among others.

These arrests come after a two-year investigation led by the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office, the Uvalde Police Department, and multiple federal agencies. The investigation resulted in 68 state indictments and 17 federal indictments related to narcotics trafficking and organized criminal activity. The operation is part of a broader effort to combat the growing gang problem in Uvalde and surrounding areas.

Governor Greg Abbott praised the operation, stating, “Gang violence has no place here in Texas, and we will bring the full force of justice down on these heinous criminals.” This operation follows Governor Abbott’s directive from September 2022, which increased resources and personnel to Uvalde to fight gang activity.

The investigation uncovered alarming trends, including the involvement of younger generations in these violent gangs. This operation not only dismantles key elements of these organizations but also sends a clear message that Uvalde County is committed to restoring safety and security in the community.

The success of “Operation U-Town” highlights the importance of collaboration among local, state, and federal law enforcement in tackling organized crime. As Uvalde continues to recover from the impacts of gang violence, this operation marks a significant step forward in ensuring a safer future for its residents.
