EAGLE PASS, Texas — Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantú spoke during the citizens communication portion of the Thursday, April 24 Commissioners Court meeting, raising concerns about the performance of the Maverick County Auditor’s Office and how it is affecting county departments.

Judge Cantú addressed the court as both County Judge and budget officer, stating that multiple departments are dealing with delays and lack of coordination tied to financial reporting.

Delays in Required Financial Reports

Judge Cantú stated that monthly receipts and disbursement reports are currently two months behind. He questioned how departments are expected to function when required financial information is not being completed on time.

He made it clear that these reports are basic requirements for county operations and that delays create real problems for departments trying to manage their budgets.

Questions Over Financial Discrepancies

During his remarks, Judge Cantú pointed to a specific example involving a county fund. He stated that a line item showed $112,023.26 in March, while a later report listed $139,927.71 without any approved budget amendment.

He tied this issue directly to accounting practices and the failure to properly reconcile financial records.

Lack of Follow Through on Requests

Judge Cantú also referenced an email sent on August 14, 2025, to the Auditor’s Office regarding issues in the courthouse. He stated that the request involved concerns tied to the 293rd District Court and had not been addressed.

He indicated that this type of delay reflects a pattern of inaction that departments are having to deal with.

Call to Work Together

Judge Cantú urged the Auditor’s Office to work with the rest of county government instead of operating separately. He stated that departments cannot continue to function effectively if one office is not meeting its responsibilities.

He emphasized that the goal should be to improve operations and serve the community, not create obstacles.

Political Tension Mentioned

During his remarks, Cantú also referenced political activity, stating that certain actions taking place inside county offices are not helping the situation. He suggested that attention should shift away from politics and toward getting the work done.

No formal response from the Auditor’s Office was given during the citizens communication portion of the meeting.

Impact on County Operations

Judge Cantú made it clear that the issues he raised are affecting departments across Maverick County. He stated that without accurate and timely financial reporting, departments are left trying to operate without the information they need.

The concerns raised during the meeting are expected to continue as part of ongoing discussions within county government.
