Parents Say Eagle Pass ISD Delayed Threat Notifications to Protect Attendance

EAGLE PASS, Texas — Parents in Eagle Pass are speaking out against what they describe as repeated failures by Eagle Pass ISD to promptly notify families about threats made at local schools. They say the district is more concerned with protecting attendance numbers than with protecting students.
Recent incidents at Pete Gallegos Elementary, Seguin Elementary, and Eagle Pass Junior High have amplified these frustrations. In each case, parents say they were not informed until hours after the threat occurred. In some cases, they claim notification came the following day. Families argue that these delays put children at risk and prevent parents from making informed decisions about their safety.
One parent told The Maverick Times, “We should be notified right away. Instead, we are left to hear from other parents or social media. It feels like they are more worried about attendance than about our kids’ lives.”
Delays Linked to Attendance
Parents allege that the delays are tied to attendance funding. Many notice that alerts often arrive after students are already counted present for the day. By then, families say they feel forced into keeping their children at school, even if concerns about safety remain.
A father of two said, “Every delay feels intentional. They want the numbers first. But what about our kids? Attendance should never outweigh safety.”

Communication Breakdown with Police
According to sources, Eagle Pass ISD police have also failed to immediately notify the Eagle Pass Police Department about some incidents. In one case, city police only became aware of a threat after a 911 call was made directly to them by the public. Parents say this lack of coordination highlights a serious breakdown in communication between the district and local law enforcement.
“If a threat is serious enough for a 911 call, parents deserve to know at that same moment,” one mother said. “The silence only makes the situation worse.”

Calls for Accountability
The district’s handling of these threats has led to growing calls for accountability. Many parents are demanding the resignation of Superintendent Samuel Mijares, saying they have lost confidence in their leadership.
Parents are also urging the district to adopt a clear, transparent policy requiring immediate notification of any threats, regardless of attendance implications.
“Every minute counts when it comes to protecting our children,” one parent said. “We cannot accept being kept in the dark any longer.”

Community Trust at Stake
As threats continue to surface across Eagle Pass schools, parents say their trust in the district has been severely damaged. Many are now questioning whether to keep their children enrolled, while others are calling for state intervention to ensure greater oversight and accountability.
For families in Eagle Pass, the message is clear: safety must come before attendance, and transparency is the only way to rebuild trust.
