TxDPS Trooper Arrests Man in Maverick County Human Smuggling Case

MAVERICK COUNTY, Texas — September 5, 2025. A Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) trooper arrested Jose Medardo Perez Serrato, 30, during a roadside investigation that uncovered a human smuggling attempt.
According to our source with Texas DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez, the traffic stop occurred in Maverick County and quickly revealed that Perez Serrato, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was transporting two additional undocumented individuals. The trooper’s investigation led to Serrato being taken into custody and charged with two counts of Smuggling of Persons.

The two migrants were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol for processing.
Officials praised the trooper’s work in identifying and intercepting the smuggling effort, noting that quick action during the roadside stop prevented the migrants from being further exploited by criminal networks.

Human smuggling continues to be a growing challenge in border communities like Maverick County, where state and federal agencies regularly conduct operations under Operation Lone Star to disrupt cartel-linked trafficking routes.
This case remains under investigation. Perez Serrato is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
