County Leaders Celebrate Major Funding Milestone for Long-Overdue Airport Revitalization

Maverick County has made a significant stride toward revitalizing its long-neglected international airport with the recent awarding of nearly $500,000 from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). This state funding will be used to initiate the design and development phase of renovations at the Maverick County International Airport, a critical infrastructure project that has awaited attention for over two decades.

The successful securing of these funds highlights the persistent efforts of County Judge Ramsey English Cantu and Commissioner Olga Ramos, who have been leading the charge to bring the airport’s revitalization to fruition. During their recent visit to the state capitol, Cantu and Ramos engaged in productive discussions with key TxDOT officials, including Commissioners Alex Meade, Alvin New, and Steven D. Alvis. TxDOT Aviation Director Dan Harmon and Airport Program Manager Daniel Benson were also instrumental in advancing this project to its current stage.

Judge Cantu expressed deep appreciation for the collaboration that resulted in this funding approval, particularly acknowledging Commissioner Ramos’s leadership in the process. “This funding represents a significant victory for Maverick County,” said Cantu. “Commissioner Ramos has shown incredible leadership in bringing our airport back into compliance, making us eligible for this crucial state and federal funding. I also want to extend my thanks to my staff members, Gabriel Villaseñor and Isaak Ruiz, who worked diligently during the application process to ensure we met all the necessary criteria.”

The Maverick County Commissioners Court has been unified in its support for this project, with resolutions unanimously approved to back the airport’s renovation efforts. Local officials recognize the immense value that a revitalized airport will bring to the region, both in terms of economic development and in enhancing the county’s infrastructure.

I look forward to many more successful projects that leverage state and federal funding, allowing us to maximize the impact of our local tax dollars.”

The funding awarded by TxDOT marks the beginning of a larger effort. With the design phase now underway, Maverick County is set to become eligible for up to $6.5 million in construction funding. This substantial amount would cover the comprehensive renovation and modernization of the airport, transforming it into a key hub for economic activity in the region.
