17-Year-Old Driver Arrested for Smuggling Undocumented Immigrants
On the evening of September 9, 2023, a Zavala County Sheriff’s Deputy was working Operation Lone Star when he conducted a traffic stop on a gold Chevy Malibu sedan for a traffic violation. The vehicle was stopped near Farm to Market Road 187 East of Batesville.

As the deputy approached the vehicle, he observed several subjects attempting to conceal themselves between the rear seat and trunk area of the Chevy Malibu. The subjects in the rear seat area, three females who stated they were undocumented, were detained. The 17-year-old from Houston, Texas was arrested on smuggling of persons charges.

The vehicle was released to a wrecker service and the three females were turned over to Border Patrol. The driver was transported to the Zavala County Jail.
