Police Chase Results in Arrest for Smuggling
A reckless driving incident on US Highway 57 west of La Pryor resulted in a police pursuit and the arrest of a driver for smuggling of persons in flight. A Sheriff Deputy working Operation Lone-Star, attempted to stop a white Jeep Wrangler at around 7:00AM this morning. However, the driver failed to yield, and a chase ensued, continuing eastbound on US Highway 57 towards La Pryor.
Despite the Deputy’s successful use of a spike strip to slow down the vehicle west of La Pryor, the driver persisted in their attempt to evade the police. The chase eventually came to a halt near the Nueces Bridge, where deputies were able to detain the driver and six undocumented immigrants.
The six undocumented immigrants were later released to Uvalde Border Patrol, while the vehicle was released to Tavo’s Wrecker Service. The driver was arrested for Sec. 20.05 Smuggling of Persons in Flight, a serious criminal offense, and transported to the Zavala County Jail.
Smuggling of persons in flight refers to the act of transporting or attempting to transport an individual across a border with the intent to obtain a commercial advantage or financial gain. This offense carries serious legal consequences, including hefty fines and imprisonment.
The swift actions of the deputies involved in this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement to upholding the law and protecting the community from criminal activity. It is a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of cooperation with law enforcement officials.
