On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, law enforcement officers in Zavala County, Texas, successfully apprehended two individuals involved in a high-speed chase and suspected of smuggling persons. At approximately 3:25 PM, a Deputy from the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office noticed a Black Chrysler 300 driving recklessly on US Highway 57 west and Farm to Market Road 1436. Concerned for public safety, the deputy attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop. However, the driver failed to yield to the deputy’s emergency lights and sirens, prompting a pursuit that headed north on FM 1436.

The suspect vehicle, still evading law enforcement, turned onto FM 1986 and continued traveling southwest until it eventually came to a stop on County Road 4017. At this point, several occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Seizing the opportunity, the driver accelerated from the stop and evaded law enforcement once again, this time traveling east on County Road 4017 towards US Highway 83, and subsequently south towards La Pryor.

However, fortune was not on the driver’s side. As the pursuit continued, the vehicle experienced a mechanical issue, resulting in the loss of its rear passenger tire. The damaged vehicle was forced onto Dean Street, near the entrance to Cemetery Road. Sensing a chance to escape, the occupants bailed from the vehicle and fled on foot.

Despite the driver’s attempt to elude capture, Deputies and along with assistance from Texas DPS K9, managed to apprehend the driver promptly. The passenger, on the other hand, briefly returned to the vehicle and attempted to flee once more. A short pursuit ensued before the vehicle caught fire, forcing the passenger to abandon it.

Quick thinking and coordinated efforts paid off as the Deputy successfully apprehended the passenger on US Highway 57 west of La Pryor. Both individuals, identified as residents of Eagle Pass, Texas, were immediately taken into custody and transported to the Zavala County Jail.

The charges against the arrested individuals include smuggling of persons and fleeing from law enforcement.
