Val Verde Commissioners To Sign Larger Laughlin Aerospace Grant Application Wednesday
Val Verde County commissioners will consider authorizing a $4.85 million state defense grant application for an aerospace and manufacturing initiative at Laughlin Air Force Base on Wednesday, plus a TxDOT agreement for a Cienegas Terrace pedestrian project.
DEL RIO, Texas – Val Verde County commissioners will consider authorizing County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. to sign a Defense Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant application for $4,848,870.84 for the Val Verde Aerospace and Manufacturing Innovation Initiative at Laughlin Air Force Base, according to the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting.
The court will also consider authorizing resolutions naming the county’s authorized representatives for the grant, according to the agenda. The item was placed by County Engineer Carlos Velarde.

The new amount is about $146,352 more than the $4,702,518.94 application commissioners approved at their Oct. 21 meeting. At that meeting, Velarde said the grant would buy three pieces of equipment, including a metal 3D printer, so base personnel can make aircraft parts that are no longer available because of the planes’ age. The agenda does not explain the change in the amount.
