Parents Outraged After Eagle Pass ISD Delays Threat Notification, Call for Resignations

EAGLE PASS, TX – Parents are demanding accountability after Eagle Pass ISD and its police department delayed notifying families and city police about a threat at Armando Cerna Elementary.
According to district sources, a 6th grade student allegedly wrote a threat on a piece of paper. Parents say they were not informed until the following day, despite the seriousness of the situation.
In a letter to parents on September 23, Principal Juan P. Leija confirmed that Eagle Pass ISD Police had been notified, writing:
“Our campus is operating under heightened vigilance, and safety measures are being taken to ensure the well-being of all students and staff. At this time, classes will continue as usual, and we remain focused on maintaining a safe and secure learning environment.”

City Police Learn Through 911 Call
While the district assured parents the situation was under control, the Eagle Pass Police Department revealed they were left in the dark.
According to their public statement:
“Earlier today, the Eagle Pass Police Department received a concerning 911 call regarding a possible active shooter threat at Armando Cerna Elementary. Our officers immediately responded to ensure the safety of the students and staff. Upon arrival, it was learned that Eagle Pass ISD Police and ISD Staff had already been made aware of the situation prior to our notification.”
The department noted that it was not informed at the earliest stage, stating:
“While the Eagle Pass Police Department was not immediately informed at the earliest stage, we remain fully committed and ready to assist in any investigation involving potential threats to our community and schools.”

Parents Contact The Maverick Times
After the news broke, parents flooded The Maverick Times with calls and messages voicing frustration over the district’s delayed response. Many decided not to send their children to school after receiving the late notification.
Parents also raised concerns that Eagle Pass ISD may be protecting the student from discipline and accused district leaders of attempting to cover up the threat. Sources within the district told The Maverick Times this is not the first time ISD officials have tried to conceal incidents involving serious student threats.
Growing Calls for Resignation
Angry parents are now demanding leadership changes, specifically calling for the resignations of Superintendent Samuel Mijares and Eagle Pass ISD Police Chief Crestino Ynosencio.
They argue that both officials failed in their duty to notify parents and city police in a timely manner, putting the safety of children and staff at risk.
“This type of delay is unacceptable,” one parent told The Maverick Times. “We need leaders who put safety first, not politics or cover-ups.”
Accountability in Question
The incident has left many questioning whether Eagle Pass ISD is prioritizing transparency and safety. Parents insist that stronger leadership and immediate communication are essential to restoring trust in the district.
For now, classes at Armando Cerna Elementary continue under “heightened vigilance,” but parents say the real issue is accountability from district leaders who chose not to notify them or the Eagle Pass Police when it mattered most.
