A suspicious device found inside a Val Verde County home

DEL RIO, TEXAS — September 19, 2025 — A suspicious container with electronic components discovered inside a Val Verde County home prompted an evacuation and multi-agency emergency response earlier this week, according to our sources with the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office.

The discovery came during a welfare check follow-up at a residence on Rusty Drive around 10:00 a.m. on September 17. Investigators noticed a device that raised immediate safety concerns. Deputies quickly secured the home and evacuated residents to ensure public safety.

Authorities established a command post at Rogelio H. Musquiz County Park while surrounding homes were evacuated. The San Antonio Police Department Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad was called in to assist. After a thorough sweep of the residence, the device was secured, and residents were cleared to safely return home.

The operation included assistance from multiple local, state, and federal partners, including the Val Verde County Fire Department, Emergency Management, Constable’s Office, EMS, Texas Department of Public Safety, Laughlin Air Force Base, FBI, DEA, HSI, and U.S. Border Patrol.

Officials have not disclosed whether the device was functional or intended for criminal use. The incident remains under investigation, and no arrests have been announced at this time.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that swift coordination among agencies prevented potential harm and allowed residents to safely return home the same day.
