Domestic Violence Incident in Del Rio Leaves One Dead, One Injured
A Del Rio domestic violence case left one woman hospitalized and one man dead in an apparent murder-suicide. Police continue to investigate.
DEL RIO, TX — A domestic violence incident late Saturday night left one woman severely injured and a man dead in what investigators believe was an attempted murder-suicide.
According to information provided to The Maverick Times by sources within the Del Rio Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:58 p.m. on August 16, 2025, to the 400 block of Far Hills Drive after receiving a disturbance call. Dispatch warned responding officers to use caution due to the possibility of weapons at the scene.
Victim Found With Severe Injuries
When officers arrived, they were met by juveniles and an older sibling who reported that their mother was inside and unresponsive. Officers entered the home and located the woman in a bedroom with severe injuries to her head and face.
A hammer, believed to have been used in the assault, was recovered inside the residence. Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to Val Verde Regional Medical Center before she was flown to San Antonio for further treatment. She remains in stable condition but is expected to undergo additional medical evaluation.
Suspect Found Deceased in Driveway
While securing the scene, officers were advised that a male subject, later identified as 52-year-old Oscar F. Salas, was found deceased in the driveway from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A long hunting rifle, believed to have been used, was discovered next to him.
Investigation Underway
Detectives with the Del Rio Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division processed the scene, collected evidence, and interviewed witnesses. Preliminary findings indicate that Salas was responsible for the violent assault on the female victim before turning the weapon on himself.
The juveniles present at the residence during the incident were placed in the care of family members. The department’s Crime Victim Liaison is now working with the family to provide support and connect them with available resources.

The Del Rio Police Department has extended condolences to those impacted by the tragedy and confirmed the investigation remains active and ongoing.
