Valdez and Cruz Advance as Diaz and Ramon Secure Council Seats

Emotions ran high on May 3 as voters turned out in strong numbers for the 2025 General Election. The city delivered a mix of clear victories and unresolved battles, setting the stage for a highly anticipated runoff in the race for mayor.

Aaron Valdez led the mayoral field with 1,853 votes, while Monica J. Cruz followed closely behind with 1,760. Jesus Casas received 892 votes. Neither of the top two candidates secured the majority required to win outright. A runoff election is now set for June 7. Election Day turnout played a decisive role. Cruz entered Saturday with a lead from early voting, but a surge of 1,258 votes cast on Election Day helped Valdez overtake her in the final count.

In the race for City Council Place 2, incumbent Elias Diaz narrowly defeated challenger Jorge Sierra. Diaz earned 2,365 votes to Sierra’s 2,041, securing just over 53 percent of the vote. The contest reflected a deep divide in voter sentiment, but Diaz’s support held firm through both early and election day ballots.

Jessica Rey Ramon captured the City Council Place 4 seat by reaching the 50 percent mark needed to avoid a runoff. She secured 2,204 votes compared to Alberto Rodriguez’s 1,618 and Hanson Uy Tesy’s 581. Ramon’s campaign energized supporters who celebrated the win as a signal of change and fresh leadership.

A total of 4,536 ballots were cast. Early voting accounted for 3,278 of those, but the ballots submitted on May 3 proved decisive in shaping the outcome. The results highlighted the power of voter turnout and the intensity of local civic engagement.

All eyes now turn to the runoff between Valdez and Cruz. The weeks ahead are expected to bring fierce campaigning, sharpened messages, and a final push to earn the trust of Eagle Pass voters. The future leadership of the city hangs in the balance.
