Student Detained for Bomb Threat at Del Rio High School
A female student was recently detained in connection with a threat to bomb Del Rio High School. District officials confirmed that the student is now in custody. Due to the lack of holding facilities for female detainees in Del Rio, the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office will transport the student to a facility outside of Val Verde County.
Making terroristic threats is a serious crime, and statutory penalties vary depending on the severity of the charge. If the false report involves a school, as in this case, the student could face severe legal consequences, including a state jail felony. A conviction for this offense is punishable by six months to two years in a state jail facility, with fines of up to $10,000. In less severe cases, charges may be reduced to a Class A or Class B misdemeanor, with penalties ranging from up to one year in jail and fines reaching $4,000.
The district issued a reminder that such threats are taken very seriously for the safety of all students and staff. Students responsible for making terroristic threats will face not only criminal charges but also significant school disciplinary actions. The administration stresses the importance of student safety and the legal consequences of hoaxes or threats in an educational setting.
