Eagle Pass City Council Retains Outside Legal Counsel to Address $2.35 Million Festival Loss

In a significant development following the substantial $2.35 million loss from the 57 South Music Festival, the City of Eagle Pass City Council has decided to retain outside legal services to pursue action against Just 1 Management LLC. Earlier this evening, during a city council meeting, the council discussed the potential legal actions against the company responsible for organizing the festival.

After returning from an executive session where item 30 was discussed— “Executive Session pursuant to Section 551.071 of Chapter 551, Texas Government Code discussion of legal options to pursue against Just 1 Management, LLC, and any other matters incident thereto; and possible action in open session”—Councilwoman Monica Cruz made the motion to engage outside legal counsel. This specific section of the Texas Government Code allows governmental bodies to consult with their attorney about pending or contemplated litigation, settlement offers, or matters where the duty of the attorney to the governmental body under the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct clearly conflicts with this chapter.

The decision to pursue outside legal counsel notably excludes the City Attorney from the process. This exclusion could indicate a desire for a fresh perspective or specialized expertise that the City Attorney may not possess. It also suggests a potential conflict of interest or a need for unbiased representation in this matter.

The City Council did not provide details in open session about the reasons for targeting Just 1 Management LLC. However, it appears that the substantial $2.35 million loss associated with the festival has not been well received by residents, prompting the city to take action to address the situation and possibly recover some of the lost funds.

The move to seek outside legal counsel signifies the council’s commitment to addressing the financial mishap and holding the responsible parties accountable. This decision marks a crucial step in the city’s efforts to mitigate the fallout from the festival and restore public trust.

As this legal action progresses, it will be essential to monitor the outcomes and the steps the city takes to ensure greater transparency and accountability in future dealings. The residents of Eagle Pass will undoubtedly be watching closely as the city attempts to rectify the situation and safeguard public interests.
