NORAD Intercepts Russian and PRC Aircraft in Alaska ADIZ
On July 24, 2024, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected, tracked, and intercepted military aircraft from Russia and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) operating within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The intercepted aircraft included two Russian TU-95 bombers and two PRC H-6 bombers. NORAD fighter jets from both the United States and Canada carried out the intercept.
Incident Details
NORAD’s surveillance identified and monitored the aircraft as they operated in international airspace within the Alaska ADIZ. Despite their proximity, the Russian and PRC aircraft did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace. This activity is not viewed as a direct threat, but NORAD continues to closely monitor and respond to such occurrences to ensure the security of North American airspace.
What is an ADIZ?
An Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) is a designated area of international airspace that extends beyond a country’s territorial boundaries. Within this zone, the identification, location, and control of aircraft are crucial for national security. The Alaska ADIZ begins where sovereign airspace ends, requiring all aircraft to be readily identifiable.
NORAD’s Role and Capabilities
NORAD is a unique bi-national command between the United States and Canada, responsible for aerospace warning, aerospace control, and maritime warning in the defense of North America. It employs a comprehensive defense network comprising satellites, ground-based and airborne radars, and fighter aircraft. This integrated system ensures seamless detection, tracking, and appropriate response to aerial activities near North American airspace.
NORAD remains vigilant and ready to employ various response options to defend North America. The interception of Russian and PRC aircraft in the Alaska ADIZ underscores NORAD’s commitment to monitoring and addressing potential threats, maintaining a strong presence in the region to ensure the safety and security of the United States and Canada.
