The Maverick County Tax Assessor Collector’s Office is facing serious allegations of favoritism, as reported by a local car dealership to The Maverick Times News. According to the dealership, which has requested anonymity citing concerns of retaliation, a select group of car dealership owners enjoy preferential treatment from the incumbent Asalia Casares. These favored dealers reportedly bypass regular queues by entering through the back door, a privilege not extended to the majority of the over 100 car dealerships registered in Maverick County.

This accusation has sparked concerns over fairness and integrity within the office, especially as these preferred dealers are also involved in selling raffle tickets and supporting other causes linked to Casares. Such actions may potentially violate the ethical codes governing the conduct of a Tax Assessor Collector, particularly in terms of impartiality and misuse of office for personal or allied interests.

Further complicating the issue, Asalia Casares is also employed full-time with the Eagle Pass Independent School District, reportedly only visiting the tax office for brief periods towards the end of the workday. This has raised questions about her ability to effectively fulfill her responsibilities as Tax Assessor Collector.

These revelations came to light during a recent episode of The Maverick Times Podcast, where discussions about the ethical implications of such favoritism were explored. The podcast also delved into the broader impacts of such practices on the community’s trust in local government operations.

Many are calling for a thorough investigation into these practices to ensure that public officials adhere to ethical standards and that all businesses in Maverick County are treated equitably.

As the community awaits further developments, the controversy serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and fairness in public administration, especially in roles that directly affect the local economy and public trust.
