Dramatic Chase Unfolds After Failed Traffic Stop
On the morning of July 22, 2023, a routine traffic stop took a dramatic turn in Zavala County, Texas. A Zavala County Deputy attempted to pull over a Gray Lincoln for failing to signal a lane change on US Highway 57, just west of Batesville, TX. However, instead of complying, the driver, Elton Dewayne Edwards, chose to flee, triggering a high-speed pursuit.
The Deputy promptly activated the emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued to evade authorities. A thrilling chase ensued, with a fellow Deputy joining to aid in stopping the fleeing car.
The pursuit came to a halt just west of Batesville when the suspect’s vehicle was finally immobilized. Elton Dewayne Edwards made a desperate attempt to jump over a fence but was unsuccessful. The Deputies apprehended both Edwards and his passenger, Thomas Earl Jr Gordon.
Law enforcement officers discovered several individuals concealed in the backseat area of the fleeing vehicle, including a 3-year-old child and a 17-year-old juvenile, later identified as Hondurans by Uvalde Border Patrol.

Elton Dewayne Edwards and Thomas Earl Jr Gordon were subsequently transported to Zavala County Jail to face charges related to the pursuit. Uvalde Border Patrol agents took custody of the underage Honduran individuals.
