The Kremlin has accused the United States of orchestrating a drone attack on President Vladimir Putin’s residence in the Kremlin, which was thwarted by Russian air defenses in the early hours of Wednesday. The Russian government called the incident a “terrorist attack” and “an attempt on the president’s life.” Putin was not present at the time of the alleged attack. The Kremlin has also reserved the right to retaliate as it sees fit. The accusations have sparked a war of words between Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S.

Initially, Moscow accused Ukraine of the attack, but footage released online on Thursday showed one of the drones being shot down over the Russian Senate, with smoke billowing from the building. Moscow then shifted the blame to the U.S., accusing it of aiding Ukraine in the attack. The Biden administration denied having any prior knowledge of the alleged attack and dismissed the accusation as “ludicrous.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine denied Russia’s claims and accused Moscow of staging the attack to gain support for intensified attacks on Ukraine. A member of Ukraine’s security service expressed skepticism that the drone had come from Ukraine due to its size, distance, and control capabilities, suggesting that a third party was most likely responsible for the attack. The incident occurred less than a week before Russia’s Victory Day parade, commemorating the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
