Bob Lee, founder of Cash App and currently the chief product officer of MobileCoin, was fatally stabbed in San Francisco during the early hours of Tuesday.
As per a press release from the San Francisco Police Department, they responded to a report of a stabbing on Main Street at 2:35 a.m. and found a 43-year-old man with apparent stab wounds. The victim was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Although the police did not disclose the victim’s identity, MobileCoin confirmed Lee’s passing in response to an email from The Associated Press on Wednesday.
In a statement, MobileCoin CEO Josh Goldbard expressed his condolences, stating that their “dear friend and colleague, Bob Lee passed away yesterday at the age of 43, survived by a loving family and collection of close friends and collaborators.” Goldbard also praised Lee’s significant contributions to the technology industry, stating that he was “made for the new world” and had a lasting impact that would be remembered beyond his short time on earth. Prior to his work at MobileCoin, Lee held key positions at Google and Square, where he founded CashApp.
According to Goldbard, Lee joined MobileCoin initially as an early investor and advisor but later became the chief product officer, playing a significant role in launching the Moby app. In 2013, Lee held the position of chief technology officer at Square, a digital payments company, and created the money transfer app, now popularly known as Cash App.
On Wednesday, prominent venture capitalist Ron Conway, founder of the San Francisco-based investment firm SV Angel, tweeted his condolences, calling Lee’s death a great loss for the entire tech community. Conway fondly recalled Lee’s inspiring speech at their CEO Summit, describing him as a remarkable innovator with an exceptional intellect and spirit. He also expressed hope that the perpetrator would be swiftly brought to justice.
The police statement released did not reveal any specific information regarding the circumstances surrounding Lee’s stabbing. In response to inquiries, Officer Niccole Pacchetti, a public information officer, stated that the investigation is ongoing and that they would provide further details when they become available.
