LONG TIME EMPLOYEES WIN GRIEVANCE TO RETURN TO WORK
On Thursday, January 26, 2023 the Eagle Pass Housing Authority Board of Commissioners held a special meeting in the Ana M. Gonzalez Community Room located at El Centenario High Rise, 2095 Main Street in Eagle Pass, Texas
The special meeting listed all agenda items under Executive Session with two former Eagle Pass Housing Authority employees holding grievances over their “questionable” termination prior to the Christmas Holidays. The employee grievances took up the first two items on the agenda with the final item being the evaluation of the Executive Director Mary Velasquez.
This three item agenda proved to be a marathon deliberation with the meeting starting at 5:30 pm and ending around 1:00 am the next day. Former employees Claudia M. Santos and Velia Valdez both were successful in regaining their employment with Housing Authority after their individual cases were heard by the Board of Commissioners of the Eagle Pass Housing Authority.
The evaluation of the Executive Director Mary Velasquez was conducted in executive session and not in public which is allowed by the Texas Open Meetings Act. Velasquez did not escape the evaluation unscathed, the board of commissioners voted unanimously to reprimand her.
Note: It is currently unclear whether the reprimand and the two employee grievances were related but The Maverick Times will be requesting a copy of her contract and the minutes to the meeting for further explanation on the situation.
