Zavala County Deputies Arrest Driver on Weapons and Marijuana Charges During Early Morning Stop

BATESVILLE, TX — A Zavala County Deputy arrested a San Antonio man early Sunday morning after discovering marijuana and multiple firearms during a traffic stop along U.S. Highway 57.
According to law enforcement reports, the incident occurred around 5:20 a.m. on October 5, 2025, when a deputy conducted a stop on a 2023 black Toyota Tundra near the intersection of U.S. Highway 57 and Farm Market Road 1866 in Batesville. The vehicle was occupied by two men, later identified as driver Norbert Lathan and passenger Johnny Rincon.

During the encounter, the deputy detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Lathan admitted to possessing marijuana in the center console and confirmed that there were several firearms inside. A probable cause search was conducted, leading to the discovery of a clear plastic bag containing a green leafy substance, as well as multiple weapons.
Lathan was taken into custody and charged with Unlawful Carrying of Weapons, a Class A misdemeanor. At his request, the pickup truck was released to Rincon. Lathan was transported to the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office for booking and processing.
Authorities remind the public that possession of marijuana and firearms together can result in serious legal consequences under Texas law. The investigation remains ongoing.
