Texas is facing a severe water crisis, particularly in the Rio Grande Valley, with far-reaching consequences for agriculture and the state’s future. Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has warned that while Texas loses about a farm a week, the more pressing concern is not the land but the water. “We’re out of water, especially in the Rio Grande Valley,” Miller emphasized. The dwindling water supply has drastically impacted the state’s agricultural production, with the Winter Garden area seeing an 80% decrease in crop production due to insufficient water.

Miller proposes several solutions to tackle the crisis. He advocates for the capture and reuse of stormwater, improving irrigation efficiency, and increasing storage capacity by building new reservoirs. Additionally, Miller highlights the potential of using brackish water—less salty than seawater—for agricultural and industrial purposes. He mentioned that a new brackish water treatment plant is set to open in Alice, Texas, providing 2.7 million gallons of fresh drinking water daily. Furthermore, Miller suggests that the oil and gas industry could switch to using brackish water for fracking instead of fresh water, helping conserve vital resources.

Funding these solutions will be costly. Miller suggests utilizing existing federal grants, tapping into funds from the Texas Water Development Board, and applying grants from the Texas Department of Agriculture. For instance, the Department has recently given out 90 grants to small communities across Texas, each worth $500,000, to replace outdated water lines.

Miller emphasizes the urgency of the situation, urging Texans and lawmakers to focus on the water crisis. The lack of water has already led to the disappearance of Pecos cantaloupes, as farmers have been forced to abandon their lands due to dried-up wells. He stresses the need for immediate action to prevent further decline and ensure that Texas has the water resources it needs for the future.
