EAGLE PASS, Texas – Maverick County commissioners will talk about the future of fire and emergency medical services in the county, including the possibility of a full-time career fire department, at a special meeting Wednesday, Nov. 4, according to the posted agenda.

The agenda, dated Oct. 29 and signed by County Judge Pablo Garcia Jr., lists the meeting for 5 p.m. in the Commissioners Courtroom at the Maverick County Courthouse, 500 Quarry St. The county’s homepage lists the same meeting at 4 p.m., so residents who plan to attend may want to arrive early or call the County Judge’s office to confirm the start time.

Fire and EMS options

Item 9, placed on the agenda by Commissioner Olga Ramos, calls for discussion of options for fire and emergency medical services in Maverick County, including a volunteer fire department model, the creation of a career, full-time fire department or any other option allowed by law. The agenda does not include cost estimates or a staff recommendation.

Scofflaw program

Commissioners will also hear a presentation from Hamer Enterprise on a scofflaw program that could be used in Maverick County, followed by a separate vote on whether to approve the program. The agenda does not describe how the program would work. Under Texas law, counties can contract with a vendor to flag vehicle registration renewals for people who owe unpaid fines or fees, and that is how these programs commonly work in other counties.

Flood siren money and other items
