EAGLE PASS, Texas – The City of Eagle Pass will honor the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts, the frontier unit first mustered at Fort Duncan, at a historical event tonight, Saturday, Oct. 31, according to the city.

“The Pillars of Our Legacy” begins at 6 p.m. at the International Center for Trade, 3295 Bob Rogers Dr. The program is directed by the Warren Perryman Foundation for Native American Research, and state Rep. Eddie Morales of House District 74 is the keynote speaker, according to the city’s event flyer.

Born at Fort Duncan

The flyer calls Fort Duncan in Eagle Pass the unit’s birthplace and lists the muster roll from Aug. 16, 1870. The names include Pvt. Pompey Factor, 16, and Pvt. John Ward, 20, both marked as Medal of Honor recipients, along with Sgt. John Kibbett, 60, and Privates John Thomasson, Adam Fay, Joe Dixie, Robert “Bobby” Kibbett, George Washington, Dindie Factor, John Wilson, John Wood and Hardie Factor.

The scouts were descendants of Black Seminoles who had settled in northern Mexico. The U.S. Army recruited them as scouts and trackers on the Texas frontier, and several members of the unit later received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award.

The city’s announcement did not list admission details. Residents with questions can call the City of Eagle Pass at (830) 773-1111.

The event falls on Halloween night, so families heading to trick-or-treat events should plan for extra traffic. The city’s Veterans Day Parade follows next weekend.
