EAGLE PASS, Texas – The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office held a loteria fundraiser against domestic violence last Thursday, raising thousands of dollars during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The event comes days after the Oct. 24 death of a Rosita Valley woman in a suspected domestic violence case. Sheriff Tom Schmerber urged anyone facing abuse to come forward early. “They need to go to the sheriff and tell them that they’re having problems, a little bit problems, before the tragedy happens,” he said.

Eagle Pass Has A Domestic Violence Shelter

Survivors in Eagle Pass do not have to leave town to find a safe place. In August, the local nonprofit Manos Unidas and the City of Eagle Pass opened a shelter for women and families affected by domestic violence, a project more than two years in the making.

“You are not alone. Manos Unidas is here to walk with you,” the organization tells survivors. The group offers temporary and long-term shelter, food and groceries for survivors, clothing for those leaving home with few or no belongings, behavioral health and mental health support, and additional resources and referrals.

Know The Warning Signs

The National Domestic Violence Hotline says abuse often starts slowly and grows over time. Even one or two of these behaviors can be a red flag.

  • Keeping you from friends or family, or showing extreme jealousy of time spent with them
  • Taking your money or controlling household finances without discussion
  • Insulting or shaming you, especially in front of others
  • Threatening to harm or take away your children or pets
  • Intimidating you with threatening looks, actions or weapons

No one deserves abuse of any kind. Help is available in Eagle Pass today.
