Recount Confirms Aaron Valdez as Front-Runner in Eagle Pass Mayoral Race Ahead of Runoff

EAGLE PASS, Texas — The manual recount of the May 3, 2025, mayoral election has verified that Aarón Valdez received the most votes in the initial contest. He now heads into a high-stakes runoff against former Councilwoman Mónica Cruz to determine who will lead the City of Eagle Pass.

Third-place candidate Jesús Casas requested the recount, which was conducted under the supervision of city election officials. Only slight numerical changes resulted, but none affected the outcome. Valdez’s final total increased by five votes to 1,862, while Cruz’s count also rose by five votes to 1,767. Casas gained one vote, closing his total at 893.

Valdez’s confirmed lead solidifies his momentum heading into the runoff and underscores the strength of his campaign in what has become one of the most closely watched local elections in recent years. Although the recount showed no major irregularities, it did incur costs that, under Texas law, must be paid by the candidate who initiated it. Casas is now responsible for those fees, including staff and administrative costs.

Since no candidate achieved a majority of the vote, the race advances to a runoff between the top two contenders. The City of Eagle Pass has scheduled the election for Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Cruz Muñoz Gymnasium. Early voting begins Tuesday, May 27, and continues through Tuesday, June 3, with polling hours from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Election Day, polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
