The Maverick Times News Demands Transparency from Eagle Pass in 57 South Music Festival Financial Loss
In light of recent revelations surrounding the 57 South Music Festival, Maverick Times News has formally submitted a Public Information Act request to the City of Eagle Pass, demanding comprehensive documentation related to the festival. This follows our investigation into the significant $2.35 million loss incurred by the city and the questionable redactions made in response to our previous information requests.
The Request for Clarity
Our formal request, submitted under the Texas Public Information Act (Chapter 552 of the Texas Government Code), seeks detailed records including:
- Contracts with Just 1 Management, LLC: Copies of all contracts between the City of Eagle Pass and Just 1 Management, LLC, as well as contracts initiated by Just 1 Management, LLC with artists who performed at the festival.
- Financial Documents for the 57 South Music Festival: Copies of checks, purchase orders, invoices, and the account ledger detailing expenses related to the festival, along with every payment made in relation to the event.
The Maverick Times News is committed to uncovering the full extent of financial dealings and decision-making processes that led to the festival’s financial shortcomings. Why were these critical details hidden from the public? Our request aims to shed light on the transparency and accountability—or lack thereof—demonstrated by the City of Eagle Pass.
Despite citing Texas Government Code Section 552.137 and Texas Attorney General Open Records Division No. 684 to justify redactions, our analysis indicates that these justifications were misapplied. Specifically, the city’s application of confidentiality clauses does not cover email addresses contained in responses to requests for qualifications or proposals related to potential contracts, as outlined in subsection (c)(3) of the Attorney General’s order.

Public’s Right to Know
The residents of Eagle Pass have the right to understand how their public funds are being utilized, especially when it involves substantial financial decisions. How can we trust the city’s leadership if they refuse to disclose vital information? The redacted documents obscured the scoring sheets and related documentation critical to evaluating the qualifications of Just 1 Management, LLC and other involved parties. This lack of transparency raises significant concerns about fairness and integrity in the selection process.
Demanding Accountability
We are urging the City of Eagle Pass to correct the misapplication of Texas Attorney General Open Records Division No. 684 and release the unredacted documents. Isn’t it time for the city to be transparent about its decision-making process? The public deserves full disclosure to restore trust and ensure that future decisions are made transparently and in accordance with legal standards.
The Maverick Times News remains steadfast in its commitment to uncovering the facts. We will continue to press for transparency and accountability, appealing any unjustified redactions with the Texas Attorney General if necessary. Our dedication to upholding the principles of open governance and the public’s right to information remains unwavering.
What’s Next?
As we await the city’s response to our information request, we call on the public and local officials to join us in demanding full transparency in the procurement process. How can we ensure fair use of public funds without full disclosure? The integrity of our city’s operations and the trust of its residents depend on it. Stay tuned to Maverick Times News as we continue to investigate and report on this critical issue affecting our community.
