Eagle Pass Celebrates Coach Oscar Ruiz’s Stellar Career and Impact on Softball

Eagle Pass, Texas, stands proud as it welcomes its own, Coach Oscar “Coca” Ruiz, to the 2024 Texas Select Softball All-Star Coaching Roster. Known for his remarkable tenure as the head coach of the Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles Softball Program, Coach Ruiz has left an indelible mark on the community and the sport.

Since taking the helm in the 2006-2007 season, Coach Ruiz has guided the Lady Eagles through an impressive record of 343 wins, 114 losses, and 6 ties over 15 years. His leadership has garnered the team 11 District Championships, 13 Bi-District Championships, 7 Area Championships, and 6 Regional Qualifiers. Under his guidance, the Lady Eagles have been perennial contenders, consistently knocking on the door of the Regional Championship and the coveted State Final Four Tournament in Austin.

Coach Ruiz’s philosophy extends beyond the diamond. He is committed to teaching the fundamentals of fast-pitch softball, including defense and hitting, while integrating important life skills and values. This holistic approach has not only developed skilled players but also prepared them to be successful citizens. Numerous players under his mentorship have not only garnered the coveted District Most Valuable Player award but have also gone on to pursue collegiate softball careers across the United States.

Before his celebrated career in softball, Coach Ruiz dedicated four years as the head coach of the legendary Eagle Pass High School Eagles Baseball Program. His extensive coaching portfolio also includes years as an assistant coach in football at the same high school.

Coach Ruiz’s connection to sports is deep-rooted. During his high school years, he was a four-year letterman for the Eagle Pass High School Eagles Baseball Program. He later continued to excel in baseball at the University of the Incarnate Word, where he played from 1986 to 1991. His college career was highlighted by earning All-Conference Rookie of the Year honors during his sophomore year. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology in 1991.

Off the field, Coach Ruiz is just as accomplished. He has dedicated 30 years to being a public school educator and coach. He is married to Sonia P. Martinez Ruiz, also an educator, and together they have six children, nurturing their family in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Coach Ruiz’s career is a testament to his passion for sports and his commitment to his community. As he joins the Texas Select Softball All-Star Coaching Roster, his legacy continues to inspire new generations of athletes and coaches. Eagle Pass celebrates not only his past achievements but also looks forward to his future contributions to the sport of softball.
