Collaborative Efforts of Deputies and DPS K9 Result in Successful Capture

In a significant breakthrough, law enforcement officers successfully apprehended a group of smuggling suspects following a traffic stop on US Highway 57. The incident took place on July 12, 2023, early in the morning a Zavala County Deputy noticed a red Nissan Altima committing a traffic violation.

Upon activating the emergency lights, the vehicle initially slowed down but then abruptly came to a halt. As the car came to a complete stop, all doors swung open, and multiple individuals attempted to flee on foot in an apparent effort to evade capture. However, the swift response of law enforcement officers prevented their escape.

Several Zavala County Deputies, as well as a DPS K9 unit, immediately sprang into action. Despite the suspects’ attempts to elude capture, the combined efforts of the law enforcement team proved successful in apprehending all occupants of the vehicle, including the driver.

Authorities have confirmed that four individuals found in the vehicle were determined to be undocumented immigrants. Border Patrol agents were contacted and took custody of the individuals, initiating appropriate protocols.

The driver of the red Nissan Altima now faces serious charges related to smuggling of persons and the likelihood of serious bodily injury or death. Law enforcement officials promptly transported the driver to the Zavala County Jail, where they await further legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the vehicle involved in the incident was released to the custody of a wrecker service. Investigations into the smuggling operation are currently underway to determine potential connections, routes, and additional individuals involved.
