Top Athletes Compete for a Spot in San Antonio

The Uvalde Qualifier is open to all permit or card-carrying members of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). Competitors will battle for a chance to advance to the prestigious San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo in February.

“This event gives both seasoned pros and up-and-coming athletes a true shot at the big stage in San Antonio,” said Rodeo Officer Cody Tharp. “Uvalde is where champions start their journey.”

This year’s event adds an exciting new discipline, Breakaway Roping, expanding opportunities for women competitors and broadening the qualifier lineup. Contestants will compete in the Qualifier Slack, with the top 20 in each event advancing to the two main performances on Friday and Saturday nights. From there, the top 10 in each event will earn a coveted place to compete in San Antonio.

Texas Talent on Display

Among the names to watch is Brandon Harrison, a Texas native who exemplifies the spirit of the Uvalde Qualifier. Harrison, a 2024 Uvalde Qualifier competitor, went on to become the 2025 San Antonio Rodeo Steer Wrestling Champion, earning $19,979 and taking home the Champion buckle. His success, event organizers say, is proof that the road to rodeo glory begins in Uvalde.

Family Fun and Youth Competitions

The event also offers something for younger fans. Mutton Bustin’ will be open to children ages 4–7, giving kids an exciting introduction to the sport of rodeo. With 20 total slots available between Friday and Saturday, each night’s winner will earn the opportunity to ride at the Frost Bank Center during the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo in February.

Parents can register participants online at sarodeo.com under the Rodeo Qualifier page.

A Celebration of Western Heritage

Organizers say the Uvalde Qualifier showcases both elite competition and community spirit. Spectators can look forward to rodeo traditions, family entertainment, and the kind of hospitality that has made Uvalde a cornerstone of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo circuit.
