EAGLE PASS, TX — A former Maverick County political candidate announced she will not seek office in the upcoming election, citing internal pressure and disagreements with party leadership during her brief campaign.

In a public social media post, Theresa “Red” Handrahan Soliz confirmed her decision to step away from the race, stating that while she entered the campaign as a Republican, her experience revealed tensions she said conflicted with her values and approach to public service.

Candidate Says She Was Told to Hold Back Part of Her Platform

In her statement, Soliz said she was instructed to withhold portions of her platform while campaigning. She wrote that she would not be told “to hold back a portion of my platform,” adding that her policy positions were evolving based on concerns raised by community members.

Soliz did not specify who issued the instruction or whether it came from party leadership, campaign advisers, or fellow candidates. Her comments, however, point to internal disagreements during her time as a Republican candidate.

Criticism of Party Control and Campaign Expectations

Soliz also stated that her campaign experience confirmed her belief that she would not be “managed by a political party.” She criticized the two-party system, describing it as inefficient and limiting to candidates who want to address local issues independently.

In her post, Soliz said she was also discouraged from certain public interactions, including where she sat at events and which individuals she could publicly associate with. She wrote that these expectations contributed to her decision to withdraw.

Decision to Run Independently in the Future

While confirming she will not run in the current election, Soliz said she plans to return to local politics after gaining a deeper understanding of county operations. She stated that when she does run again, it will be as an independent candidate, not under a party banner.

She encouraged voters to focus on candidates based on issues affecting their communities rather than party affiliation.

Questions Raised About Party Dynamics

Soliz’s remarks have sparked discussion among local voters about internal dynamics within the Maverick County Republican Party. Her statements raise broader questions about how candidates are supported, advised, or constrained during local campaigns, particularly first-time candidates.

At this time, the Maverick County Republican Party has not issued a public response to Soliz’s statements. No party official has confirmed or denied her claims regarding campaign guidance or platform limitations.

The Maverick Times reached out for comment. As of publication, no response had been received.
