Parents Question Lack of Notification After Verbal Threat at Eagle Pass ISD Campus

EAGLE PASS, TX — A recent verbal threat at an Eagle Pass ISD elementary campus triggered an immediate administrative and police response, but the district is now facing renewed criticism from parents who say they were not informed directly about the situation — even after a notification was later confirmed to have been issued.

The incident began when a student verbally stated that he intended to carry out a shooting and claimed he would target a classmate first. Once administrators were notified, the campus activated district safety protocols and the Eagle Pass ISD Police Department assisted with the response.

Superintendent Samuel Mijares stated that the investigation determined the comment was made “as a joke,” but emphasized that all threats, even those not intended to be real, must be handled with full seriousness to protect students and staff.

Parents Say They Never Received the Notification

Following publication of the initial report, The Maverick Times received a screenshot showing that the school sent a notification to parents regarding the incident.

However, many parents who contacted The Maverick Times maintain that they never received the alert. Others said they only learned of the threat hours later through social media, conversations with other parents, or rumors circulating in local group chats.

One parent said, “If a notification was sent, many of us did not get it. That is a major problem.”
Another added, “There is no reason we should be finding out from Facebook. Whether it was a joke or not, our children deserve better communication.”

Several parents expressed confusion about why some received the alert while others did not, arguing that safety-related messages should reach every household without exception.

Concerns Over Ongoing Communication Issues

Parents pointed to a pattern of inconsistent messaging from Eagle Pass ISD during safety incidents this year. Some expressed frustration that the district has not provided an explanation for why the notification did not reach all families.

“We appreciate that the school sent a message, but when half the parents don’t get it, the system is not working,” a parent told The Maverick Times. “This keeps happening.”

Parents emphasized that the district needs a reliable and uniform process for distributing safety alerts, regardless of the platform used.

District: Protocol Required an Immediate Response

Superintendent Mijares reiterated that all threats must be investigated and treated as real until proven otherwise.
He stated that failing to report a threat can bring consequences for both staff and students.
He also noted that students involved in similar incidents this year have faced disciplinary placement in the district’s alternative school.

The superintendent did not provide additional details on why the notification failed to reach many families or whether a follow-up communication would be sent.

Parents Call for System Review

Parents who spoke with The Maverick Times said the district needs to thoroughly review its communication systems, especially ParentSquare and automated alerts, to ensure that critical safety messages do not get lost, delayed, or delivered inconsistently.

They also called for greater transparency when threats occur, noting that accurate information from school officials prevents misinformation from spreading online.

The Maverick Times will continue to report.

  1. Maverick Time hit another home run, by hitting the ball outside the baseball’s limited field: to wit: good reporting real confirmed news. In regard, to the parents complaining that the school district did not notify them about the threat incident, meaning the student involved or general communication to every single parent? We do not want another Uvalde’s shooting incident, where the school’s police, city, county, state and Texas Ranger did not have courage, to confront a shooter. Instead of indicting every police officers involved, the district attorney indicted a selected few, to stop the community’s outcry.
