Uvalde Police Department Investigate Death of Congressman Tony Gonzales Staffer Found on Fire at Her Residence

Authorities are investigating the sudden and disturbing death of Regina Santos-Aviles, a staff member for Congressman Tony Gonzales, after she was reportedly found on fire at her residence over the weekend.
According to Uvalde police, officers responded late Saturday night to Santos-Aviles’s home following reports of an emergency. She was transported to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday morning. The exact cause of death has not been released.

In a press release issued Monday (below), Uvalde Police Chief Homer E. Delgado confirmed that investigators are working with the Texas Rangers, Uvalde EMS, and the Medical Examiner’s Office to gather records and determine what happened. Chief Delgado said that, at this stage, there is “no indication of foul play,” but acknowledged that the investigation will take time to complete.
The unusual circumstances, particularly reports that Santos-Aviles was found on fire before being rushed to the hospital, have raised suspicion within the community. Many residents are questioning how such an incident could occur without signs of criminal activity, especially given her role as a congressional staffer.

Santos-Aviles had served as Regional District Director for Congressman Gonzales since 2021 and was well-known in Uvalde for her work with the Chamber of Commerce and the Uvalde County Fairplex. Gonzales released a statement honoring her dedication and commitment to the community, calling her passing a devastating loss.
While officials maintain that foul play is not suspected, the lack of answers and the shocking details surrounding her death have fueled speculation and demands for transparency. Investigators continue to examine the case, and more information is expected in the coming weeks.
