Eagle Pass Mayor Salinas Calls Out Mayoral Candidate Monica Cruz Over Puerto Verde Stance

EAGLE PASS, TEXAS — A heated exchange between Mayor Rolando Salinas and mayoral candidate Monica Cruz has brought the controversial Puerto Verde project back into the spotlight. Salinas, who has consistently opposed the project, took to social media to highlight his long-standing resistance to Puerto Verde while questioning Cruz’s recent declaration against it.
Mayor Salinas emphasized that his opposition to Puerto Verde is well-documented, backed by numerous public hearings where he voiced concerns about the project’s potential negative impact on the City of Eagle Pass.
“Since day one when I evaluated this project, I have been in opposition because I believe it will be detrimental to the City of Eagle Pass,” Salinas stated. “We have had numerous public hearings where I have publicly voiced my concerns about Puerto Verde.”
Salinas did not shy away from suggesting that Cruz’s opposition is a last-minute attempt to gain political support. “Even though it took four years, I am glad Ms. Cruz has finally made a statement against Puerto Verde,” Salinas remarked. “I suggest you contact our State Senator, Lt. Governor, and Governor. That would have a more meaningful impact than you sharing your opposition of PV on Compro y Vendo.”
Monica Cruz, who is currently running for mayor, recently posted on social media, claiming she is “100% AGAINST Puerto Verde.” Her statement seemed to align with Salinas’s long-standing opposition, but the Mayor’s pointed comments suggested skepticism about her sincerity.
Critics argue that Cruz’s sudden opposition to Puerto Verde is a calculated move to align herself with Salinas’ popular stance just before the mayoral runoff election. They point out that she has not been consistently active in opposing the project during her time on the City Council.
The Puerto Verde project, which aims to establish a new port authority district in Maverick County, has been a contentious issue for Eagle Pass residents. Mayor Salinas has warned that the project could negatively impact the city without proper community input or oversight.
As the mayoral runoff election approaches, the exchange between Salinas and Cruz has sparked fresh questions about which candidate truly represents the city’s best interests. Salinas’s consistent record of opposition stands in contrast to Cruz’s recent statements, leaving voters to decide which leader they can trust to stand firm for the community.
