Jim Jordan’s quest for the House Speaker role, a surprising development casts a spotlight on the actions of Congressman Tony Gonzales and his apparent neglect of his district. Despite Jordan’s earnest efforts to secure support, a formidable wave of opposition emerged within the Texas delegation.

During the crucial second round of voting, U.S. Reps. Kay Granger, Tony Gonzales, and Jake Ellzey, all hailing from the Lone Star State, took a stand against Jordan’s bid. While Granger and Gonzales threw their weight behind House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Ellzey lent his support to Rep. Mike Garcia.

Jordan’s aspirations faced a setback, with his vote tally falling short of the 217 required for victory, totaling only 199. Notably, 22 Republican votes, including Gonzales’s, voiced their protest against the far-right Ohioan.
Amid this political turmoil, Jordan chose to conduct only one round of votes on Tuesday, affording him time to rally additional supporters. Simultaneously, Republican operatives in Texas launched intensive campaigns aimed at influencing dissenting representatives.

While these pressure tactics managed to sway some representatives, others grew disenchanted with the aggressive methods employed. This disillusionment notably affected moderate Republicans who became less inclined to support Jordan.

Inside Texas delegation, Jordan never managed to secure resounding support from his Republican peers, despite some initial backing.
Comparatively, the path to the Speaker’s role was notably smoother for former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who ultimately assumed the position in January. McCarthy’s traditional rise through party leadership, including his previous role as House Minority Leader, contrasted sharply with Jordan’s path, which relied on his influence within the far-right wing of the party.

Throughout this turbulent process, Democrats voiced grave concerns about the prospect of a Jordan speakership. His tenure in office had been marked by controversy, including his role in former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, his support for government shutdowns in 2013 and 2018, and allegations of knowledge regarding sexual abuse within the Ohio State wrestling team, allegations which Jordan firmly denied.
