With this triumph, Eagle Pass (26-10) secures their spot in the regional semifinals for the second consecutive year. O’Connor coach Weston Heiligman acknowledged the Eagles’ strength, praising their previous success in the playoffs. He recognized that baseball can be a humbling sport, admitting that despite O’Connor’s confidence as a great team, things didn’t go their way in this series. Heiligman credited Eagle Pass for having two outstanding days while acknowledging his own team’s shortcomings.
The Panthers (22-11-2) initially displayed promise in Game 2 by scoring the first run of the game during the opening inning. Isaac Hernandez led off with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, reached third base on a wild pitch, and crossed home plate on Dillon Lopez’s sacrifice groundout. However, the Eagles quickly took control of the game by scoring four runs in the third inning. Robert De La Garza and Izhar Mauricio delivered crucial triples during this pivotal inning, with De La Garza driving in a run and Mauricio collecting two RBIs. Mauricio then scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice groundout by Mikey Kypuros. In the fifth inning, Derek Ruiz sealed the victory for Eagle Pass with a two-run homer over the right-field fence, extending their lead to 6-1.
Eagle Pass coach Reynol Mendoza attributed their success in Game 2 to improved batting, solid defense, and strong pitching from starter Hector Buentello. Despite the disappointment of the series loss, Coach Heiligman expressed pride in their achievements, including reaching the third round for the second consecutive year and clinching the District 29-6A title this season.
