Tragedy struck at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Thursday when an American Airlines employee passed away due to traumatic injuries. The news was confirmed by spokespeople from both the airport and EMS.

Bailey Grimmett, spokesperson for ABIA, disclosed that the Austin-Travis County EMS was summoned to the airport after 2 p.m. for an individual who sustained injuries on the tarmac near Gate 24. Although medics were dispatched to the scene, they were unable to resuscitate the person, who was pronounced dead on arrival.

While the Austin-Travis County EMS stated that the individual died of “traumatic injuries”, no additional information was available at the time.

In an official tweet, the airport revealed that the incident had occurred outside of the terminal, where aircraft usually park at their gates. Despite the tragedy, the airport emphasized that there were no significant impacts to its operations.

“Our thoughts are with this employee and all those impacted by today’s tragic event,” the airport said in the statement, assuring that its staff was working closely with the airline and emergency services personnel to deal with the situation.
