FIVE DEAD, EIGHT INJURED IN LOUISVILLE BANK SHOOTING, INCLUDING GUNMAN: LATEST UPDATES AND DETAILS
The Louisville Metropolitan Police Department has reported a shooting at an Old National Bank location in Kentucky’s city, leaving five people dead, including the gunman, and eight others injured. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. when officers responded to the scene within minutes. They “encountered the suspect almost immediately, still firing gunshots,” said Louisville Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey. According to police, the lone shooter had a connection to the bank location and is “deceased.” During the exchange of gunfire, at least two police officers were hit, and one of them is currently undergoing surgery.
President Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland have been briefed on the situation, said a White House official and Justice Department officials. Humphrey praised the heroic response of the officers, stating that they prevented the situation from becoming even more catastrophic. Images taken at the scene showed a police officer with his weapon drawn, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were also present.
Old National Bank has deployed support for employees affected by the tragedy, and CEO Jim Ryan expressed his condolences, saying that their safety is paramount. Witnesses reported that the shooter had a long assault rifle and began firing on the first floor. Mayor Craig Greenberg advised the public to avoid the area around Slugger Field until further notice.
The FBI’s Louisville office has also responded to the scene, and the agency’s special agents are supporting law enforcement partners. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we will continue to assist as needed,” the FBI tweeted. Despite the tragic incident, Humphrey believes that the community is safe, and the police department is doing its best to serve and protect.
