Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantú announced his resignation from office, effective August 17, 2026, following legal proceedings seeking his removal and court orders that he says restricted his ability to publicly discuss certain county government matters.

In his resignation address, Cantú said his decision was not a surrender or admission of wrongdoing. He reflected on nearly 20 years of public service, including his time as Mayor of Eagle Pass and Maverick County Judge, while highlighting accomplishments from his approximately three and a half years leading the county.

Cantú pointed to nearly $38 million in grant funding, investments in law enforcement and emergency services, airport improvements, new county facilities, recreational projects, border security funding, and three clean external audits.

He also addressed ongoing controversies involving the Maverick County Auditor's Office and criticized the district judges responsible for appointing the County Auditor.

Cantú said he is leaving office with a clean conscience and clean record and made it clear that his involvement in public service may not be over, even hinting at a possible future appearance on the ballot.

The Maverick County Commissioners Court will now be responsible for selecting someone to serve the approximately 125 days remaining in Cantú's term.
